SPIEL Essen is using all eight exhibition halls of the Essen venue for the first time, making another visitor record possible. Beyond that, the event offers plenty of innovations for gaming fans from all over the world.
Essen, September 3, 2026 – When the gates of Messe Essen open from October 22 to 25, 2026, the entire international gaming world will once again look toward the Ruhr region. SPIEL Essen is outdoing itself once again this year: With the addition of Hall 8, the world's largest public fair for board games is using all the halls of the exhibition grounds for the first time in its history. This marks a new space record of a total of 81,200 square meters full of fun, new releases, and creativity. A maximum of 230,000 gaming enthusiasts will be able to populate the halls this year to celebrate the fascination of board gaming together – meaning SPIEL Essen 2026 is also expected to set a new attendance record.
For these visitors currently 921 exhibitors from 53 countries, are bringing their newest games to Essen. Well over 1,500 new games are expected again, many of which will celebrate their debut at the fair. Exhibitors are coming from all over the world to the heart of the Ruhr region for this, and SPIEL is delighted that many nations are returning this year that were absent last year, such as Argentina, Iceland, Kuwait, and Slovakia.
Innovations: Action, B2B Matchmaking, and the Whole City Caught in Board Game Fever
Even though board games are usually a bit more chill, the gaming worlds offer plenty of action. If you want to experience a live dose of adventure in between, you can do so right at the fair: In cooperation with Games Workshop, there will be a giant laser tag arena for up to 24 participants per match for the first time. Here, teams can compete against each other in the fantastic tabletop world of Warhammer 40k between sessions at the gaming table in the halls.

SPIEL is more than just a product fair – it is a hub for the gaming industry. Representatives from retail, editing, game design, illustration, and many more meet here to network and launch new business. For trade visitors, professionals, and publishers, the official SPIEL app has been expanded this year with a brand-new B2B matchmaking tool that makes global networking even more targeted, simple, and effective. In addition, the connection between SPIEL, the fair management, and the city is growing closer than ever: Under the title "Essen spielt!" ("Essen Plays!"), they have launched a joint campaign that carries the SPIEL feeling far beyond the exhibition halls. With three game nights at special locations, exclusive discounts for ticket holders, and a special refreshment in participating gastronomy venues, the fair is even more closely integrated into the cityscape.

Awards at SPIEL: German Games Prize, TCG Awards, and Golden Demon
Alongside relaxed gaming and discovering new releases, SPIEL Essen is also home to major awards in the world of games.
Since 1990, SPIEL has presented the German Games Prize (Deutscher Spiele Preis) every year, allowing the entire German-speaking board gaming community to vote for their favorite titles of the year. This year, many thousands of board game fans have voted again to choose their Top 10. The top three places will be ceremoniously awarded on Wednesday at the fair.

Brand new this year are the TCG Awards, the world's first global industry awards for Trading Card Games, which are celebrating their grand premiere at the fair to properly honor this booming segment of the gaming world. Here too, TCG fans were able to vote and choose their favorites. In addition, industry awards were determined by an expert jury. The awards ceremony will take place in a festive, exclusive setting on Thursday evening and will be streamed live simultaneously.

Furthermore, the European leg of the world-renowned miniature painting competition Golden Demon, hosted by Games Workshop, is returning to SPIEL Essen this year. Talented artists from all over the world submit over 1,000 fantastically painted miniatures, which are then evaluated by an expert jury. Coveted trophies are awarded across 14 categories, but none is as fiercely contested as the Slayer Sword, a real, full-sized sword presented for the overall victory. The awards ceremony for this outstanding competition will take place publicly on Sunday on the stage in Hall 4.

Stage with Talks, Supporting Program, and Educators Day
This year, SPIEL is once again bringing a broad supporting program of talks, presentations, and other events to a large stage area in Hall 4. Interested visitors can follow the program here on all four days, free of charge and without registration. The highly popular Educators Day—featuring presentations centered around games in schools, research, education, and related fields—will also take place here on Friday.

The entire program will also be streamed on SPIEL's official YouTube channel, allowing people at home to experience it live or watch it again after the fair.
Likewise, there will once again be a live stream from the halls, where hosts Daniel and Simon take fans at home along to the fair, giving them a taste of the SPIEL atmosphere and plenty of cool events even if they cannot attend the board game fair in person.
Artist is Ambassador of SPIEL Essen 2026
In past years, SPIEL has presented well-known personalities as ambassadors. The team is continuing this concept this year by incorporating the theme of art and illustration: American illustrator and artist Peter Mohrbacher (Magic: The Gathering, Angelarium) is the official face of SPIEL Essen 2026, bringing his fantastic visual language directly to the community.

The SPIEL Essen online ticket shop has been live since the end of July, and ticket demand is high. Despite the higher capacity of tickets due to the new hall, a solid 50% of available tickets for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday are already sold, with Sunday lagging slightly behind. For Press Representatives and Media
For media professionals, SPIEL Essen opens as early as Wednesday, October 21, with a press conference at 10:00 AM in the Grugahalle right next to the exhibition halls. The press conference will last approx. 40 minutes and provide insights into the organization, current figures and facts of the fair and the industry, as well as highlights of SPIEL.
Following this, the German Games Prize will be presented live on-site, and trophies will be handed out in a ceremony lasting approx. 20 minutes.
Starting at approx. 11:00 AM, the Novelties Show will open, where publishers will present their latest titles to the attending media even before the fair begins.
